Cash-in-transit guard robbed leaving supermarket in KZN

A cash-in-transit guard is fortunate to tell his traumatic tale of events after he was robbed by armed suspects after loading the cash boxes earlier today, Thursday, 22 June.

The Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Tongaat Operations Centre received a call of a Cash-In-Transit robbery in progress at approximately 16:23.

RUSA reported that their Reaction Officers were immediately dispatched and on arrival established that three armed men confronted a Security Officer in a passage as he exited a supermarket.

“The suspects deprived him of two cash boxes containing an undisclosed amount of money and his firearm. They then fled on foot in an unknown direction.
It could not be established if their getaway vehicle was parked on Gopalall Hurbans Road,” the report read.

Owing to the Cash-in-transit guard’s compliance with the armed criminals, no injuries were reported.

INSIDE JOB FIDELITY SECURITY OFFICERS CHARGED

Meanwhile, three men employed as Fidelity security officials appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrates’ Court last month on charges of cash-in-transit robbery.

Mzwandile Choko, 60, Molefe Sidwell Molefe, 61, and Deon de Lange, 48, were arrested on Wednesday, 10 May, and made a brief appearance in court.

According to the spokesperson for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in the Free State, Captain Christopher Singo, the trio was arrested by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team based in Bloemfontein.

He said their arrest followed a cash-in-transit heist which took place in Bloemfontein on 9 May.

“The armoured vehicle of Fidelity security company was en route from the company depot to the Bloemfontein central business district (CBD) to deliver cash. It is alleged that before the security officials reached their destination they were accosted by a group of heavily armed suspects at McKenzie Street east end in Bloemfontein,” he said.
