Carte Blanche says: “South Africa has an appetite for violence. Have recent anti-immigrant campaigns put the country on the precipice of yet another wave of xenophobic attacks?”
FRONTLINES
Stoking the Flames
Xenophobic violence that ravaged the country in 2008 left an enduring stain on the new South Africa. In 2015, one highly placed leader referred to immigrants as fleas and violence erupted immediately. Now, Operation Dudula – a Soweto-born movement consisting of citizens reportedly targeting foreign traders and alleged criminals – is spreading the call to #PutSouthAfricansFirst; and politicians are also pointing to foreigners as the cause of the country’s hardships.
As hatred bubbles under unchecked, the country becomes unsafe for many legal foreign nationals who have blended into society, working menial jobs or getting by as informal traders. We meet migrants who live and work here in a time of concerted campaigns to make their lives untenable. (Producer: Siniketiwe Hlanze | Presenter: Macfarlane Moleli)
Presenter Macfarlane Moleli says: “The insights from Angelo Fick on this story are really mind blowing. He really delves into who we are as a nation, and what we have become because of our chequered past.”
Protesters say the foreign workers are stealing South Africans’ jobs. As anti-immigrant sentiment continues to spread throughout the country, Carte Blanche investigates whether some of the country’s political elite are fuelling hostilities, and looks into the increasing xenophobic online rhetoric.

Russian Roulette
Will Russia invade Ukraine, or won’t it? As Russian President Vadimir Putin plays Cold War-type brinkmanship games on the borders of Ukraine, global markets and the Rand get the jitters. But why has the South African government had so little to say about its BRICS ally continuously threatening a sovereign nation that prizes its hard-won democracy? INVESTIGATION
Mayoral Motor Mayhem
Over the past year, several mayors across the country have been involved in fatal road accidents. Entitled to VIP protection, in only one crash was the mayor being driven by his protectors. In one metro, family members of the deceased are still waiting for an accident report while, in another, the authorities are suspected of a cover-up. Carte Blanche investigates the most recent cases that have left nine people dead. Who is to blame and who will be held accountable? (Producer: Kate Barry | Presenter: Bongani Bingwa)

Hoppers of Biblical Proportions
Persistent rainfall has transformed the usually arid Northern Cape and Karoo into a lush, green landscape. But it has also brought a two-year-long plague of brown locusts. Native to the Karoo and Southern Namibia, these hungry hoppers have been hatching in swarms dense enough to eclipse the sun and lay waste to entire crops. Carte Blanche takes to the road to track down a swarm and witness the effects of the onslaught ourselves. (Producer: Stenette Grosskopf | Presenter: Claire Mawisa)
