#Masks4All
In the new normal – as the world adjusts to the reality of a rampant, highly infectious virus – entering a crowded public space without a mask is becoming increasingly frowned upon. But will a mask keep you safe? Or keep the world safe from you, if you’re infected? Carte Blanche investigates the science behind masks and how we need to manage the available resources to pull South Africa through the crisis and beyond. Ramping Up Testing for COVID-19 in South Africa
Well into South Africa’s stringent 21-day national lockdown and with government on high alert, the number of positive patients is still steadily rising and with a delay in obtaining results, it seems the country’s infection rate may be skewed. Countries that have seemed to get on top of the COVID-19 pandemic appear to have rolled out testing to the highest number of people. Now the national Health Department has set out an ambitious plan to screen and test thousands in every province. So could an intensified roll-out of screening and testing finally be the difference? Against the Ropes: The Public Protector
In March, the Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane suffered yet another defeat when the high court set aside her report on the president’s CR 17 campaign funds. The damning judgment is one of several high-profile matters where the courts have either questioned her competence, her honesty or her understanding of the law. She says she is being unfairly targeted. But now a bigger battle looms for Mkhwebane, as parliament may soon begin proceedings that could remove her from office, and some of her most senior staff have spoken out about her leadership of this important institution.(Producer: Joy Summers | Presenter: Derek Watts)
