Community pools set to reopen

Summer in Cape Town is about to get a lot better, now that the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department has announced that it will reopen 37 community swimming pools in a phased approach this summer.

According to the City, the reopening of swimming pools will be rolled out in phases over the summer season, into the new year too.

“This is an achievement for Cape Town’s communities. Despite the challenges posed by ageing infrastructure, we will see 37 pools reopen in phases, providing safe, quality recreational spaces for residents this summer,” Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross said.

When?

The projected opening dates for 27 swimming pools are as follows:

  • Between 6 December 2024 and 15 December 2024, the following pools are scheduled to reopen:
    • Athlone,
    • Hanover Park,
    • Parow Valley,
    • Bellville Central,

    • Mnandi,
    • Eastridge,
    • Lentegeur,
    • Langa,
    • Kensington,
    • Observatory,
    • Sea Point,
    • Monwabisi Resort,
    • Morningstar,

  • Then from between 16 December 2024 and 31 December 2024, 10 more facilities are scheduled to reopen:
    • Manenberg,
    • Goodwood,
    • Bellville South,
    • Strand,
    • Khayelitsha,
    • Westridge,
    • Browns Farm,

The City also added that this reopening schedule would allow for continued minor and major repairs and maintenance to be conducted even as the pools become operational. This phased approach also ensures a balance between access and ongoing upgrades.
