Cape Town ranked 10th most dangerous city in the WORLD
Cape Town took the 10th spot in Statista’s most dangerous cities ranking for 2023.
The statistics are based on the murder rate per 100 000 inhabitants of each city.
CAPE TOWN NOT FAR BEHIND MEXICO
According to Statista, Cape Town’s murder rate in 2023 was 64 people per every 100 000 people in the city. Top of the list was Celaya in Mexico with 109,39 murders per 100 000 people. The other cities, not in South Africa or Mexico, on the top 10 ranking, are St. Louis in the USA, and Fiera de Santana in Brazil.

SA’S HIGH CRIME RATE
The current statistics from World Population Review show that South Africa has the third-highest crime rate in the world. There is a significantly high rate of assaults, rape, and other violent crimes. Contributing factors include poverty, inequality, and normalisation of violence.
According to Cape Town Today, 6 945 South Africans succumbed to homicide between July and September 2023. Genocide Watch reported that SA has the world’s third-highest murder rate, which is six times the US average.

JOURNALIST UNCOVERS DARK SIDE OF CAPE TOWN
Donal MacIntyre, an investigative journalist, visited Cape Town to investigate what he refers to as “the grip of a violent crime wave” and published his findings in a YouTube video at the end of last year. He stated in his video that almost 3 000 people per year are murdered in Cape Town – this is more than triple the number in the whole of the UK.
Cape Town has been flooded with cheap firearms, drugs, and gang activity.
MacIntyre says that his “journey into Cape Town’s underbelly has been a shocking eyeopener” and that “there’s a feeling of constant anxiety”.
