As Cape Town gears up for the much-anticipated Two Oceans Marathon this weekend, residents and businesses are preparing for a series of road closures that will impact movement across the city.

The marathon, set to take place on Saturday, 5 April, for the main race and Sunday, 6 April, for the Half Marathon, is expected to draw thousands of athletes and spectators, causing significant traffic disruptions.

According to Cape Town Etc, numerous road closures and restrictions will be implemented across the city from Wednesday, 2 April, leading up to and during the marathon.

Two Oceans Marathon traffic restrictions and detours

Starting from Wednesday, 2 April, various roads in the Green Point area will either be closed or have restricted access to accommodate marathon preparations. Key roads such as Fritz Sonnenberg Road, Vlei Road, and Granger Bay Boulevard will see closures from 6:00 to 20:30 in the days leading up to the event, with extended restrictions on race day.

On Saturday, 5 April, a major portion of the Main Road, from Newlands to Fish Hoek, will be inaccessible at different intervals from as early as 3:30 AM. The popular Chapman’s Peak Drive will also be closed from 3:30 AM to 10:30 AM, affecting regular commuters and weekend travelers.

Sunday, 6 April, will see additional closures, primarily affecting Main Road through Newlands, Claremont, and Constantia, with restrictions in place until mid-morning. Motorists are advised to plan ahead and seek alternative routes to avoid being caught in congestion.

Impact on residents and businesses

The closures, while necessary for the smooth running of the marathon, pose logistical challenges for local businesses and residents. Shops and restaurants along the affected routes may experience disruptions in deliveries and customer access, while public transport services will also face detours and schedule changes.

Despite the temporary inconvenience, many businesses and residents are embracing the event, recognising the economic boost that comes with an influx of visitors. Hotels, guesthouses, and local vendors stand to benefit from the heightened activity around the marathon weekend.

Two Oceans Marathon community preparations and support

To mitigate the effects of the closures, city officials have urged residents to familiarize themselves with the affected routes and adjust their plans accordingly. Event organizers have also provided detailed maps and alternative transport options to assist those navigating the city during the marathon.

With the scenic beauty of Cape Town serving as the backdrop, the Two Oceans Marathon remains a highlight on the city’s calendar, bringing together elite athletes and enthusiastic participants from across the globe. While road closures may pose challenges, the excitement and spirit of the event promise to make it a memorable occasion for all.
