The mayor of Cape Town Patricia de Lille has condemned the “despicable” racist words of a 26-year-old Capetonian whose tweet full of foul language about the government went viral, and said she is referring it to the South African Human Rights Commission.

“I condemn these comments as there is no place for racism in our society. We are healing from the division and our painful past and we remain committed to fighting the scourge of racism and bringing about unity and inclusivity,” she said in a statement on Tuesday.

“People like Matt Theunissen need to understand that we will not tolerate their racism,” she said. “Matt Theunissen has to understand that racism is hurtful and we live in a democracy where we are all equal and no one can discriminate, disrespect or infringe on anyone’s rights or dignity.”

Theunissen, who apparently lives in Noordhoek and studied at Stellenbosch University, posted a tweet in response to Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula saying South African rugby and cricket teams would be banned from hosting major events because they had failed to racially transform sufficiently.

In the tweet, Theunissen said, “So no more sporting events for South Africa.. I’ve never been more proud than to say our government are a bunch of K#####S.. yes i said it so go f### yourself you black f##### c####.”

His tweet went viral and caused much outrage, and came shortly after a similar response over Rhodes scholar Ntokozo Qwabe boasting on Twitter how he had made a white waitress cry. Theunissen’s details, even his address, were posted online by Twitter users.

Theunissen went on radio on Tuesday and apologised for what he said. (The link to his interview is at the bottom of the story.)

But said one Twitter user, “Let put #MatthewTheunissen and #NtokozoQwabe in the same jail cell for 10 years. That should sort them out !”
