Canal Walk’s commitment to environmental sustainability
This award highlights Canal Walk’s dedication to environmental sustainability. It furthermore establishes it as a frontrunner in the real estate sector for eco-friendly practices, as reported by bizcommunity. The centre showcases its dedication to sustainability through various initiatives that enhance its environmental performance.
The Green Star SA rating system evaluates buildings based on various criteria. Criteria include energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environment quality, and also resource management. Achieving a 5-star rating highlights Canal Walk’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
Located in the Century City precinct, and located on the N1, this Cape Town shopping centre is the third-largest shopping centre in Africa, according to Cape Town Tourism.
The centre has over 400 stores and a variety of eateries. Additionally, it has 17 cinemas and a play centre.
Main achievements
Markedly, Canal Walk has reduced its energy use by 34% since 2009. This sets a high standard for energy efficiency in the shopping industry. Additionally, the shopping centre uses water 44% more efficiently than the average in the industry, thanks to innovative water-saving strategies.
Canal Walk is also setting an example in waste management. The centre has greatly decreased the amount of waste it sends to landfills by adopting sustainable waste management techniques, including 40-ton in-vessel composer to handle food waste, as reported by Property Wheel.
Gavin Wood, the general manager of Canal Walk Shopping Centre, acknowledged the 5-star green star achievement, saying that it is a significant milestone for Canal Walk and ‘a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our entire team’.
