R51 million to keep Cape Town clean this summer
The City of Cape Town has set aside R51 million for its Festive Season Cleansing Programme to keep Cape Town clean this summer.
Cape Town cleaning programme underway
In an effort to maintain a high level of cleanliness over the summer and festive season, the City of Cape Town has once again kicked off its Festive Season Cleansing Programme for the 2024/25 financial year.
The R51 million programme is a supplementary cleansing service supporting the City’s standard cleansing activities, which has been in operation from 1 October 2024 and will run until 30 April next year.
According to the City, the programme is designed to ensure that recreational areas are not affected by litter, thereby maintaining Cape Town’s image as an attractive tourist destination.
“Due to the influx of tourists and holiday makers visiting the city’s business and recreational areas, and the festive carefree atmosphere that descends at this time of year, litter levels can increase noticeably.” Alderman Twigg
“Recognising the importance of the City’s tourism sector, maintaining our recreational areas to a high standard is a key deliverable for the Urban Waste Management Directorate. This year, we will continue to strive towards the highest standards of cleanliness that the City of Cape Town has become synonymous with.” he added.
Alderman Twigg also appealed to the public, asking that all litter be disposed of in public litter bins. He added that while the City’s teams were hard at work, the public should also remember that they have an important role to play in keeping the City clean.
How will the programme help?
The cleansing programme will provide extra cleaning services on all main arterial, transport routes, scenic routes, beaches, tourist hotspots, and central business districts.
These services and activities will include:
- Installing and servicing litter bins,
- sweeping streets, as well as
- removal of illegally dumped material to landfill.
Workers will committ to the programme seven days a week, including public holidays until 30 April 2025.
