Braamfontein shooting: UJ mourns the loss of student caught in crossfire
The victim, an 18-year-old male second-year student, was caught in the crossfire while travelling on a bus from the university to Johannesburg City Centre.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) expressed profound sadness through a social media post upon learning about the death of one of its students in a shooting incident that occurred in Braamfontein on the afternoon of 29 February.
The victim, an 18-year-old male second-year student, was caught in the crossfire while travelling on a bus from the university to Johannesburg City Centre, where he resided.
Another student, fortunately, is currently recuperating in the hospital from injuries sustained during the incident.

“The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has learnt of the death of its student, who was caught in crossfire during a shooting incident in Braamfontein this afternoon (29 February 2024). Another student is recovering in hospital,” read the social media post.

UJ authorities are actively collaborating with law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident. Furthermore, the university has initiated counseling services. These services are for students who were present on the bus at the time of the shooting.
The South African reported that Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, spokesperson for the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng, stated that unknown suspects shot two men inside a parked vehicle.
As a result, during the shooting, a university bus was also caught in the crossfire. This resulted in two students being shot.
