The chief of a company repeatedly implicated in corruption allegations at the state capture inquiry died in a horrific car accident near O.R. Tambo International Airport, it has been reported.
The Germiston mortuary confirmed that the body of 71-year-old Gavin Watson, chief of Bosasa, had been brought in early on Monday, according to News24 and SABC. Pictures and video of the white Toyota Corolla posted on Twitter showed virtually the entire front of the car smashed in. One news report said that the car had driven into a concrete pillar.
It was the second accident in several days that claimed the life of a senior South African business executive. Top businesswoman Thandi Ndlovu was also killed in a car accident on Saturday morning.
The Bosasa group of companies have been mentioned in the Zondo inquiry into state capture, mostly pertaining to government contracts, and also in reports regarding an apparent R500,000 contribution (allegedly made by Watson) to the presidential campaign of Cyril Ramaphosa (#CR2017).
Watson was reportedly due to testify on Tuesday. Legal experts have been quoted saying that Watson’s death will not affect the State Capture Enquiry.
