Body of missing US student found after hiking at Devil’s Peak

Brook Cecilia Cheuvront, a 20-year-old US student, disappeared while hiking at Devil’s Peak in Cape Town on Saturday.

Brook Cecilia Cheuvront, a University of North Carolina (UNC) student who went missing while hiking at Devil’s Peak near Cape Town, has been found deceased.

Cheuvront, who was on an internship at the University of Cape Town (UCT), went on a hike on Saturday, 21 September, and her body was found by a search party on Sunday afternoon, 22 September. 

US STUDENT WHO WENT MISSING WHILE ON A HIKE FOUND DEAD 

The 20-year-old, a UNC sophomore and a Morehead-Cain Scholar, had been in South Africa for barely a month before her untimely death. 

According to the Morehead-Cain website, Brook enjoyed trail running with her dogs, playing violin, and participating in wilderness backpacking expeditions in her spare time.

At Carolina, she was very much interested in studying astrophysics, environmental justice, and creative writing. 

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie also confirmed that it was Cheuvront’s body that was found in an area that is part of Devils Peak and retrieved by EMS helicopter.

Pojie said an inquest was registered for further investigation by Mowbray detectives and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the possible cause of death of the 20-year-old.
