Another fire outbreak at kwaMasinenge

A fire outbreak tragically destroyed 70 shacks, leaving one person dead at KwaMasinenge, Port Shepstone, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

At the weekend, a fire at KwaMasinenge, Port Shepstone, on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal, killed one person and burned 70 informal houses.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Fire & Emergency Rescue Team, in collaboration with Ugu Fire & Disaster, SAPS, and private security agencies, responded to the fire outbreak at KwaMasinenge Informal Settlement on Saturday, 12 August 2023.

More than 70 informal houses were supposedly and tragically destroyed by fire, leaving one person dead. This fire outbreak followed another that occurred less than a month ago, destroying more than 100 shacks in the same KwaMasinenge Informal Settlement.

The many emergency response teams collaborated to prevent further devastation from the latest outbreak. Several government and private agencies have been deployed to aid the victims of this disaster.

WHAT DID MEC FOR KWAZULU-NATAL COOPERATIVE GOVERNANCE AND TRADITIONAL AFFAIRS SAY?

According to the statement issued by MEC for KwaZulu-Natal Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Bongiwe Moloi, the fire affected approximately 70 informal houses.

“We extend our gratitude to all agencies and individuals involved in this challenging situation, and we remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community members.

“We are also concerned that this is the second incident in a very short space of time.

“We urge the public to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines when dealing with electricity and any heating appliance.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available,” read the statement.

WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THE KWAMASINENGE FIRE?

SAPS is still looking into the cause of the outbreak and other circumstances surrounding this incident.
