ANDRIES BOOYSEN

Andries Booysen, 51, appeared briefly in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court and was granted R2000 bail.

The action of this man who is said to be the husband of the principal of the Crowthorne Christian Academy school, has left many angry. This man manhandled a 13-year-old student because he was disgusted by the fact that the student had dreadlocks, which he said was not in line with the school’s policies.

Although this school has a policy that instructs students on what kind of hairstyles can and cannot be done, the Gcabashes, which is the family of the student whose hair has been dismissed at school, said that this policy does not include the hairstyle because it belongs to her natural hair, thus their daughter should not have been discriminated against like this.

WHAT IS THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SAYING ABOUT THIS ISSUE?

Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Department of Education in Gauteng, says that what happened to the student is absolutely unacceptable.

“The department has sent staff to assess the situation and their policy, so that it works for everyone. There is nothing wrong with dreadlocks because they are natural hair and there is nothing wrong with braiding with extensions. Schools must focus on teaching and education,” said Mabona.
