At the launch of #ORTamboFridays in Ivory Park, Midrand, African National Congress (ANC) members chanted “Save Us Cyril” as they waited for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to address them.

During the address, Ramaphos said “we must fight for the ANC of integrity, the ANC of respect, the ANC of good behaviour”.

He said “our veterans stood up because they are concerned about the current state of our movement; moved by their deep love of the ANC”.

The ORTamboFridays campaign is about “doing practical things to change the lives of our people” and regaining the ANC’s role as the leader of society, he said.

“This launch of #ORTamboFridays represents a recommitment to the national democratic revolution “because the ideals for which [Tambo] sacrificed his life cannot die. While the ANC lives, Comrade OR Tambo cannot die…”

#Ramaphosa said it’s important to “have the courage to admit that our movement is plagued by factions and divisions; we must spread the message of unity.” Only a united ANC can unite its people, he said.

He said only a united ANC can unite South Africa’s people; and that comrades should be respectful, constructive and honest in their engagements… rather than engaging in gossip.

“We must condemn the disease of booing and heckling and disrupting meetings; it is not the ANC way.”

He said it’s time to bring back the ANC glory and give hope to the people again… “reclaim the ANC of Oliver Tambo”.

“The ANC is about changing lives, improving lives and giving our people a better life. It exists not to enrich others.”

Earlier today, Ramaphosa addressed the delegation at the end of the three-day World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa in Durban. He said Africa is rich but poor – although Africa is rich with mineral resources, its people will not be able to realise the full benefit of these opportunities unless the continent acts now to develop its human capacity, he said.

He said: “We need, as responsive and responsible leadership, to take a long view…

“We need a leadership that puts the needs of citizens first. As we leave Durban, let us leave understanding the urgency of our task.”
