ANC Chief Whip, Jackson Mthembu, is reportedly suing SABC’s Hlaudi Motsoeneng for defamation, after Motsoeneng made claims during a live broadcast that Mthembu had tried to ‘capture’ him. (See video below.)
In a business briefing which was aired live on 27 October 2016, Motsoeneng said “I met him at a certain hotel” in a meeting that was “co-ordinated by someone” and that Mthembu had discovered “nobody can capture me. That is the reality… so he should not talk too much” (referring to Mthembu’s criticism about progress at the SABC).
According to reports, the ANC Chief Whip has retaliated by seeking a public apology and R1-million damages for “malicious and defamatory allegations” from Motsoeneng, who is currently the Group Executive of Corporate Affairs at the SABC.
A spokesperson for Mthembu reportedly said a letter was sent to Motsoeneng a fortnight ago demanding a public apology, retraction of the remarks and details of where the supposed meeting took place. Since Motsoeneng didn’t respond, Mthembu’s counsel has now initiated court proceedings.
