LIEUTENANT-GENERAL NHLANHLA MKHWANAZI ON LAWYERS REPRESENTING AKA MURDER SUSPECTS
Lindokuhle Mkhwanazi, Eddie Myeza, Lindani Ndimande and Mziwethemba Gwabeni are the names of the five suspects who appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
At the media briefing on Tuesday evening, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi voiced that court proceedings could take longer than expected.
“They [lawyers] will always twist and turn things and the case may take longer than perhaps we may all want it to take. But, that will be left to the court,” Mkhwanazi said.
After attending the first court proceedings yesterday, Mkhwanazi voiced that it worried him to see that the murder suspects were being represented by “expensive lawyers”.
“To pitch up here represented by very expensive lawyers is concerning. It just says to us ‘Are these lawyers doing this thing because they want to serve so that people get their rights in terms of the law or they are doing it for money,” Mkhwanazi said.
“We tend to suspect that maybe the latter could be the money. But, I am not a lawyer, I was never a lawyer so I don’t know what it entails or under what circumstances you represent someone,” he added.
MURDER SUSPECTS TO APPLY FOR BAIL
On the other hand, the South African Police Services and the National Prosecuting Authority believe they have sufficient evidence, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi shared at the briefing.
Nonetheless, during their first court appearance, the five suspects are said to have expressed that they intend to apply for bail, ECR reported. They are set to appear in court again on 6 March.
They are facing 10 charges including conspiracy to commit murder, two counts of murder, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of firearm and ammunition.
