Ethiopia to house the largest airport in Africa

Ethiopian Airlines has announced a deal to design a new airport in Ethiopia, which once complete, will be the largest airport in Africa.

Africa’s largest airport to be built in Ethiopia

Ethiopian Airlines has signed a technical advisory and consultancy contract with Dubai-based engineering and consulting company Dar Al-Handasah Consultants, to design and supervise a Mega Airport City in Ethiopia.

According to a press release from the airline, the new project will house the largest airport in Africa and will have the capacity to serve 110 million passengers each year.

It will be located just 40km from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, at Abusera in Bishoftu city and is is set to revolutionize air travel in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Airlines‘ Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew said that the project would not only enhance connectivity but also drive economic growth and prioritize environmentally responsible practices in Ethiopia and beyond.

“With its exceptional capacity and world-class facilities, this new airport promises to elevate African aviation and strengthen partnerships, marking a significant advancement for the region’s air travel infrastructure” Tasew said in the release.

Features

The new project is set for completion by 2029, and phase one of the plan is expected to cost at least US$6 billion. Some of the features of the four-runway airport will include:

  • over 100 000 square metres of cargo and support facilities.
  • a 1.1 million sqm terminal including passenger facilities
  • over 120 000 square metres of airline support facilities
  • an associated airfield and other essential infrastructure

The airline said that the building’s architecture will “incorporate elements of Ethiopian heritage to establish a new emblematic structure for the nation – a people-centric, intuitive airport characterised by sustainability, resilience and future-readiness.”
