Afrikaner refugees may also have their dogs flown to the US

Afrikaners seeking refugee status in the US are also bringing their pets along for a shot at the ‘American dream.’

Amid the news that the first group of applicants under President Donald Trump’s Executive Order has been “approved,” some Afrikaners seeking refugee status, and eventually permanent residency in the United States, are making plans to bring their pets, particularly their dogs, along with them.

Earlier in February, Trump had announced that white South Africans could apply for asylum, arguing that they faced “racial discrimination” in their home country.

Afrikaners intend to bring their dogs on dedicated flights

According to a report by Reuters, the first batch of Afrikaner applicants has reportedly been approved for the refugee status programme in the US.

The group of around 30 people completed their hour-long interview at the US Embassy.

The news agency claimed that tens of thousands have expressed interest in the programme in the hopes of leaving South Africa. According to several Afrikaner WhatsApp groups, some have even discussed their life abroad. This includes the possibility of their pet dogs being chartered on a flight to the US.

The US Embassy has declined to comment.

CAN PETS BE TAKEN TOO?

While Trump’s refugee status offer to Afrikaners permits them to bring their extended family along, where does it leave their furry friends?

As part of the refugee resettlement process, pets can be reunited with their owners abroad. This is one of many projects facilitated by the SPCA International under the Apollo’s Aid refugee programme.

However, there are strict travel requirements in place. This includes domestic animals like dogs being microchipped and having all their vaccinations, particularly rabies. They also require a health certificate to declare the animal fit to travel.
