Civil rights organisation AfriForum on Tuesday made a presentation regarding farm murders in South Africa to members of the Parliament of Western Australia… in an attempt to persuade the Australians that farm attacks (346 so far this year) and farm murders (46 this year) are a serious issue and that President Cyril Ramaphosa’s denials are “blatant lies”.
AfriForum is on a mission to convince the world that President Cyril Ramaphosa was wrong when he told Bloomberg, in New York last month, that “there are no killings of farmers… of white farmers in South Africa”.
Ramaphosa was in fact responding to President Donald Trump’s tweet in which he claimed there was a “large scale killing of farmers” in SA.
Today AfriForum’s Ian Cameron said that the Australian MPs were “shocked” by Ramaphosa “denying the existence of farm murders in South Africa despite the evidence that already exists, as well as further evidence made public today by AfriForum”.
The ‘evidence’ shown today included videos of Ramaphosa and EFF, apparently illustrating how they’ve created a “polarised climate”.
The presentation was also dedicated to victims by telling the story of two-year-old Willemientjie Potgieter who, Cameron said, “died a torturous death at the age of two” along with her parents during a farm attack in the Free State.
While Willemientjie’s story is horrific and tragic, it seems out of place in a presentation about the South Africa situation today… since she was killed eight years ago in 2010.
“Those who care about human rights played an important role in bringing about the end of apartheid, so if minorities are being oppressed today, we have an obligation to speak out against it,” said Aaron Stonehouse MLC, Liberal Democrats MP.
AfriForum says that the MPs indicated that they will continue raising the matter and support the message worldwide. “Some of the members also made it clear that they will further the cause of this campaign in Australia,” said AfriForum.
