Delivered at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban to a packed crowd, these are the socio-economic challenges the African National Congress hopes to address in the 2024 vote:

  • Ramaphosa promised to crackdown on crime and corruption in the country.
  • He said government would deploy resources to tackle crime, infrastructure theft and gender-based violence.
  • The ANC wants more young people in the labour market to help grow the economy at a faster pace.
  • Finance Minister, Enoch Godongwana, expects 0.6% economic growth in 2024, followed by 1.3% in 2025, and 1.6% the following year.
  • Specifically, Ramaphosa says he will introduce massive public employment programmes. Over the next five years, 2.5 million-work opportunities will be delivered.
  • South Africa was once the most industrialised economy in Africa, and the African National Congress wants to get back to those glory days.
  • Furthermore, the key to unlocking this re-industrialisation is energy, railways and logistics.
  • Ramaphosa said, Transnet has more or less disintegrated over the last five years and freight logistics have lost billions. African National Congress will allow third-party access to the railway network from mid 2024.
  • President Ramaphosa hopes to deal with the high cost of living, too. He alluded to food security and VAT exemption on certain food items. Likewise, the party will expand water, electricity and housing projects.
  • Finally, Ramaphosa confirmed that he would sign into law the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill. Costing has not been done yet, but it would be implemented in phases starting from 2024.
