2023 Matric Results: What to expect
Will the Free State remain on top for the third year running? Here’s what to expect when the 2023 statistics are released tomorrow.
The matric class of 2023 have just two more sleeps before learning their fate as the Department of Basic Education will be releasing results on Friday morning.
However there are a number of key areas to look forward to when Minister Angie Motsekga makes her announcements tomorrow.
Last year the class of 2022 made history as it was the first to surpass 80% pass rate. Previously the class of 2013, with a pass rate of 78,2% was the highest.
PROVINCIAL RESULTS
For the last two years, the Free State has continued to surpass Gauteng as the top performing region in the country.

The province is edging closer to reaching a pass rate of 90% after the class of 2022 achieved a pass rate 88,5%. While Gauteng achieved 84,4% in 2022.
Meanwhile Limpopo, Northern Cape and Eastern Cape are likely to continue to in the bottom three. All three provinces achieved a pass rate of over 70% in 2022, with Limpopo making the biggest improvement with an increase of 5,3%. A similar trajectory this year will see them edge closer to the 80% mark as they will go from 72,1% to 77,4%.
TOP PERFORMING SCHOOLS

While provincially the results may or may not be ideal, the public are often drawn to which schools are the top performing in their province. This may also help in determining a high school to place a child in.
According to Searche, the following schools are amongst the top performing schools in 2022:
- Eunice Senior Secondary
- Hoërskool Waterkloof
- Parel Valei High School
- Hershel Girls High School
- Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool
- Hoërskool Hopetown
THE COUNTRY’S TOP PERFORMERS

Every year, the country’s astounded when top performers are revealed to have achieved achieved 100% in various subjects including STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
Last year the battle for top matric learner overall resulted in a tie between Kelly Prowse from Rustenburg Girls’ High School in the Western Cape and Husnaa Haffejee from al-Falaah College in KZN.
DROP OUT RATE
Motskega is expected to reveal how many started grade 1 in 2012 and made it to matric in 2023.
This figure can also be compared to the number of learners who sat down for their grade 10 exams compared to 2023.
According to the class of 2022, it began with 1 177 089 pupils in Grade 1 in 2011, and there were 775 630 matric pupils in 2022.
