What happens to KFC customers’ R2 donations to ‘Add Hope’?

KFC customers have donated over R1 billion in donations to its ‘Add Hope’ charity campaign. But where has all the money gone?

For the last 15 years, KFC has surpassed R1 billion in “Add Hope” donations—but where has all the money gone?

Earlier this month, a local franchise issued a written warning to one of their employees for not meeting their R2 target from the public.

‘ADD HOPE’ RAISES OVER R1 BILLION IN DONATIONS

According to KFC Marketing Manager Andra Nel, the Add Hope campaign in South Africa has raised over R1 billion in its 15 years of operation.

However, it is not just the R2 donations from consumers; the company’s social responsibility trust have also chipped in to reach the milestone amount.

Nel told Kaya FM: “The beautiful thing that probably we’ve been a bit too humble about is that KFC also contributes to Add Hope.

“Of the R1 billion, KFC has donated almost R400 million, and our customers have donated just over R600 million.”

WHAT IS KFC DOING WITH THE MONEY?

According to KFC’s Add Hope campaign, the R2 donations help feed 30 million of nutritious meals to children throughout South Africa.

The funds are allocated to over 130 non-profit organisations around the country.

In 2022, KFC responded to social commentary that the money was used to pay their employees.

The official X account tweeted: “We appreciate your concern, but KFC as a business pays its employees. Its structure is separate from that of Add Hope. Through Add Hope, we ensure that nearly 150 000 children in South Africa don’t go to bed hungry daily”.

And responding to tweeps who complained about being asked to donate at KFC tills, they tweeted: “Every customer has the right to say NO. Giving is supposed to leave you feeling happy and should promote social connection and cohesion.”
