SA reacts to R2000 gin price at Soweto nightclub Konka
A South African on social media shares a shocking R2000 Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin price from popular nightclub, Konka.
South Africans took to social media on Monday, 15 March to respond to the R2000 Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin Bottle price from Konka.
R2000 FOR A DRY GIN BOTTLE
A social media user @WaNkwatisa says he’s judging everyone who goes to Konka after sharing the R2000 dry gin receipt.
“I’m judging everyone who goes to Konka. Y’all are idiots. Period!” says the social media user.
The R2497 bill shows that the unknown patron paid R2000 for the dry gin bottle, R270 for six Schweppes Tonic and tipped the waiter R227.
Checkers and Pick and Pay reports that a Bombay Sapphire London Dry Gin Bottle 750ml is usually R379.99.
This means a Konka client pays R1621 more that the “normal” gin price at a local shopping store.

KONKA PRICES
Joburg reports that Konka is famously known on social media for expensive bottles of premium alcohol, with some bottles retailing for over R14 000.
While social media users have continuously hit out at the reckless spending at the establishment and attributed it to money laundering, Konka’s PR manager Linda Moeketsi told IOL in 2021.
“The speculations on social media are disheartening as they have never been made for non-black-owned establishments who have been operating in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg for over 20 years.”
“Black success should be celebrated and not questioned, and the most disappointing thing about it all is that it is always questioned by our fellow black brothers and sisters,” said Moeketsi.
Social media user @LindelaniFaith says: “Yoh I’ll rather go there already drunk and just sit. I am so strict with my money.”
@Mulumisi160056 replies: “You won’t be able to even enter. They need to buy a bottle to enter that beautiful side of Konka, cheapest being Tanqueray for R1050.”
@jacksinthumule8: “South Africa is not a poor country, it’s a country with poor people.”
