It’s not always easy to report serious crimes, but a report that’s made could stop a criminal act from happening – as well as making the correct authorities aware that there’s a need for investigation.
Authorities like the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), the South African Police Service (SAPS), and Eskom all have specific hotlines where reports can be made.
If you suspect a crime or criminal act, don’t stay quiet.
All reports have to be treated confidentially, and can be made anonymously.
Here’s where to report serious crimes in South Africa, and why it makes a difference.

REPORT SERIOUS CRIMES: CRIME STOP
Crime Stop is the authortity established for tip-offs, whether you have a suspicion of something, information about something, or have been a witness to something.
If there’s anything that you feel the authorities should know, contact the Crime Stop hotline at +27 86 001 0111.
According to the SAPS website, every report is independently investigated.
REPORT: SOCIAL GRANT FRAUD
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the agency in charge of paying social grants.
If someone keeps your social grant card (or spends your social grant payment), this is a crime and could be charged. Social grants are only for the applicant – and cannot be claimed for with false information.
Report social grant fraud to their hotline at +27 80 060 1011.

REPORT: ELECTRICITY THEFT OR FRAUD
Electricity theft or fraud is a crime, and could also be physically dangerous to the communities that it happens in. Live electrical connections are sometimes exposed by criminals, leading to electrocution dangers for themselves and others.

Report suspicions or sights directly to Eskom for investigation.

REPORT SERIOUS CRIMES INVOLVING CHILDREN OR MINORS
Any crimes or criminal acts involving children or minors can be reported to Childline at +27 80 005 5555. A report can also be filed with the SAPS, or with the relevant government body (e.g. Department of Health) who will subsequently contact the next agency in charge.
