The Outlier website has released its monthly grocery basket comparison for July 2023 – with several changes from previous months.
Prices of 12 staple foods and products were collected from eight major South African retailers, namely: Makro, Woolworths, Spar, Shoprite, Checkers, Pick n Pay, Food Lover’s Market and Boxer.

- 500g Fatti’s & Moni’s spaghetti, or store brand
- 400g smooth Black Cat peanut butter
- 1kg Jungle Oats
- 100 Joko tagless teabags
- 700g loaf of Albany Superior sliced white bread, or store brand
- 2-litre sunflower oil (cheapest option)
- 2.5kg Iwisa maize meal
- 2.5kg Selati white sugar
- 2-litre milk (cheapest option)
- 2kg Tastic rice
- 2.5kg Snowflake cake flour
- 175g bar of Dettol herbal soap
According to the data, for the fourth month in a row, Makro offers the cheapest basket at R426.90 while Woolworths was the most expensive at R510.88.
That’s R83.98 more than Makro.
