INTERESTING! South Africa’s uniquely shaped houses
Did you know Duff Road in Durban is famous for its transport inspired built houses. While an out of this world home is in Johannesburg’s West Rand.
We all have some some idea of what our dream houses would be like. For many it must have a pool and and most likely a mansion. But what if the house can be in shape of your favorite mode of transport?
Interestingly in Durban’s suburb of Avoca lies three interestingly built homes, right on the same street.
TRAVEL INSPIRED HOUSES
Travelling along Duffs Road, you may come across two homes or should I say things that appear out of place.

Ramdarie was the owner of a bus body-building business also on Duffs road. Reflect his business, his offices were built in the shape of …. a bus!
Build amongst standard homes are two homes resembling an aeroplane and ship. Both these marvels were according to Your eThekwini website, were the works on the hands of Dookie Ramdarie.

Without any formal education, Ramdarie was able to conceptualise and build the homes which have stood for over 50 years.
HOUSES STRAIGHT OUT OF THE INDIAN OCEAN
With a love for travel, the aeroplane home was built in 1962, before building the ship house in 1983 as a present for his son’s wedding.

Painted in classic beach colors, white and blue, the Ship house has attracted thousands if visitors over the years including architects from the University of Natal (now UKZN).
Anyone wishing to live in this landmark home will have to dig a little deep.
The three bedroom, three bathroom home, is currently on sale for around R3million.

High on a cliff in Kloofendal koppie in Johannesburg’s West Rand lies a flying saucer home (or UFO HOUSE).
Built in 1993, the house has been featured in adverts for LG and was according to TimesLive, labelled as Africa’s most extreme home” US TV channel HGTV in the early 2000’s.
