We want you to have the best Heritage Day possible this Sunday (24 September 2023), so we’ve collated a list of the best prices for Braai Day 2023.

Heritage Day, or Braai Day as it’s become known, falls on a Sunday 24 September 2023 this year. And it’s therefore observed on Monday 25 September as well. This upcoming long weekend is all about celebrating the heritage and culture of our nation.

And, for most South Africans, that means a bumper, non-stop long weekend of braaing. Throw in the Springboks vs. Ireland RWC game on Saturday 23 September and there’s every conceivable reason to make this Heritage Day a three-day-long braai marathon!

We’ve scoured South Africa’s favourite supermarkets to find you the best prices for Heritage Day 2023. Below you’ll see we created a ‘chop’ basket and a ‘dop’ basket, with a couple of essential braai items included. Here’s how the top four retailers rank on price this Heritage Day:

As you see, on the ‘chop’ side, Shoprite comes out tops in a comparison of best prices for Braai Day 2023. This is achieved through its boerewors, garlic bread, lambchops and firelighters being the cheapest across the four supermarkets.

When it comes to our ‘dop’ basket, Shoprite and Checkers come out exactly even. Interestingly, Woolworths is the cheapest of the lot for alcohol. Although this doesn’t entirely make up for it being the most expensive for food items.
