Europe is currently experiencing a number of labour shortages in various sectors. Here is the list of areas where persons from outside of Europe stand higher chances of securing work in Europe.
To the surprise of many South Africans, these labour shortages are not just for highly skilled professionals. There also exists a huge demand for blue-collar workers.
Many of the world’s best places to live are in Europe. A number of European cities offer high standards of living.

LABOUR SHORTAGES IN EUROPE
A report by the European Labour Authority (EURES) on labour shortages and surpluses (based on 2022 data) states which occupations are in short supply in the European Union (EU) countries.
The report by the EURES lists some of the most needed professions in the EU. And some of them are in short supply in up to 16 countries.
JOBS AND VISAS
Foreigners who have expertise or qualifications in these professions stand better chances of obtaining job offers and getting a work visa in the European Union.
Around 400 different occupations have been classified as occupations in short supply in at least one European Union (EU) or Schengen Area member state.
PROFESSIONS IN DEMAND IN EUROPE
According to EURES, the following professions are the 20 most-needed skillsets across the EU:
- Bricklayers and related workers
- Carpenters and joiners
- Heavy truck and lorry drivers
- Metal working machine tool setters and operators
- Nursing professionals
- Plumbers and pipe fitters
- Building and related electricians
- Welders and flame cutters
- Concrete placers, concrete finishers and related workers
- Sheet metal workers
- Floor layers and tile setters
- Software developers
- Cooks
- Building construction labourers
- Electrical mechanics and fitters
- Applications programmers
- Generalist medical practitioners
- Bus and tram driver
- Motor vehicle mechanics and repairers
- Specialist medical practitioners
JOBS IN EUROPE
SchengenVisaInfo states that the EU Commission has suggested promoting targeted labour migration from non-EU countries in specific skills groups, as one of the ways to resolve labour shortages among member states.
Therefore a number of EU countries have amended their migration policies to be more accommodating to foreigners, particularly those whose labour is in need.
