World Aquatic Championships: SA women’s water polo side to play Canada

The South African women’s water polo team ended their group stage campaign on a winning note at the World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan on Thursday.

The side beat Argentina 12-9.

The scores by quarter were 2-2, 5-3, 2-2, 3-2.

The SA women’s side had lost their two earlier Group C matches convincingly, going down by the same scoreline of 24-2 to both Italy and Greece.

The side will now face Canada – who were runners-up in Group D – in the playoffs on Saturday, 22 July at 11:30 (SA time).

The winner of that match will go on to face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals, while the loser will drop into the playoff bracket for ninth to 12th places.

Meanwhile, the SA men’s side lost 30-5 against Serbia on Wednesday.

In their opening match on Monday, the SA men’s side lost 35-10 to Montenegro.

In two matches to date the SA men’s side have scored 15 goals while conceding 65.

The SA men’s side will wrap up their Group D commitments against Spain on Friday at 03:30 (SA time) in what is likely to be another heavy defeat for South Africa with Spain having beaten both Serbia and Montenegro to date.
