Government schools in South Africa broke up for the June-July holidays on Friday, 23 June.
In a change from previous years, all schools – both inland and at the coast – broke up for the holidays on the same day.

There is no longer a week’s difference between inland and coastal schools in breaking up and returning to school for the third term as in previous years.
ANSWER | When is the next public holiday in South Africa?
To note: Inland provinces are the Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West, while the coastal provinces are the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Northern Cape and Western Cape.
Government schools will start the third term on Tuesday, 18 July.
For parents, that means children will be on holiday for 16 days (Monday to Friday) as well as four weekends for a total of 24 days.
The third term will comprise 52 school days and will end on Friday, 29 September.

The Department of Basic Education’s 2023 school calendar shows that this year will comprise of 199 school days across four terms, with 32 days set aside for school holidays and eight public holidays in between.

- Term 1: 18 January to 31 March – Complete
- Term 2: 12 April to 23 June – Complete
