POSSIBLE REASONS FOR A DOG’S RED EYES

1. ALLERGIES

Allergies can cause red eyes in dogs.

Common allergens include pollen, dust, weeds, mold, mites, and food.

Allergies may come with other symptoms like runny nose, sneezing, and itchy skin.

Identifying the specific allergen is crucial for treatment.

Your veterinarian can conduct tests or use elimination diets for diagnosis.

Treatment may involve antihistaminic or anti-inflammatory drugs.

2. PINK EYE

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the eye’s clear layer, the conjunctiva.

It can be infectious (viruses or bacteria) or non-infectious (allergens or irritants).

Symptoms include puffy eyes, swollen eyelids, and abnormal eye discharge.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause.

Visit your vet for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

3. SOMETHING IN THE EYE

Just like us, dogs can get irritated eyes from small objects like dust, grass, or hair.

It usually affects one eye, but both eyes can be affected in certain situations.

You can visually inspect the eye and try flushing it with a saline solution to remove the object.

If you’re unsure or your dog resists, it’s best to visit the vet for proper treatment.

After removing the foreign object, your dog’s eye should return to normal within a few hours.

4. DOG CHERRY EYE

Cherry eye is a condition where the third eyelid protrudes, causing a pink or red bump to appear in the corner of the eye.

It happens when the tear gland becomes inflamed and forces the membrane out of place.

Surgery is usually required to fix the condition, and it’s best to do it sooner rather than later for better outcomes.

Red eyes in dogs can result from dust particles or more severe issues like tumors.

If you notice a sudden occurrence with a visible particle, rinsing the eye with saline may help.
