Severe thundershowers are expected to affect parts of the Western Cape and the Namaqua from Tuesday afternoon, 27 June. The weather service issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for thunderstorms, which indicates there is a high likelihood of minor weather-based impacts.

WESTERN CAPE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING
The severe thunderstorms are associated with a cut-off low pressure system. The warning is valid from 12:00 on Tuesday until 8:00 on Wednesday.

The thunderstorms may become severe over the West Coast, central Cape Winelands and southern Central Karoo Districts in the Western Cape on Tuesday and overnight. The western parts of Namaqua in the Northern Cape will also be affected.
“Quick downpours accumulating to 20 to 35 millimetres, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail are possible,” said the weather service.

THE POTENTIAL IMPACTS INCLUDE:
- Quick downpours.
- Excessive lightning.
- Large amounts of small hail.
- Flooding of vulnerable roads, low-lying areas and bridges.
- Structural damage, especially in informal areas.
- Loss of livestock, crops and agricultural production is also expected.
