CCTV video footage has captured the incredible moment when a terrified South African farmer, being led out of his home to almost certain death, turned the tables on his three-armed attackers.
The farmer had gone to investigate noises in his open garage area, and when he opened the adjoining door found three balaclava-clad intruders pointing their revolvers at his chest.
In the video, you can see one of the men grabs the farmer by his jacket and begins to lead him out into the scrubland of his farm with the fear of investigators being that he was to be executed.
The farmer puts on a front that he is afraid and begs for his life as he is dragged towards the bush, but within seconds he has made the decision that would be for him life-or-death.
He grabs the loaded gun of his main captor and overpowers him and then takes aim as all three robbers realise they have met their match and sprint away into the darkness.
The furious farmer, pumped full of adrenalin, opens fire at his fleeing potential would-be-killers – it is not known if they returned fire but some 15 to 16 bullet rounds are clearly heard.
South African Police arrived at the scene shortly after local armed security companies, at the farm at Kameeldrift West just 20 miles north of Johannesburg, with a K9 unit of sniffer dogs.
They discovered a heavy blood trail and have ascertained that one of the robbers is badly wounded. They found a discarded balaclava and a knife, and are following up a series of leads on the armed gang.
With the three armed robbers put to flight, the Rambo-style-farmer immediately contacted fellow farmers through a “bushwire” alert system they have developed to offer armed assistance.
Heavily armed guards from the Green Light Community Project arrived with armed local farmers and carried out the initial hunt for the gunmen until South African Police arrived on scene.
The incredible CCTV video from the farmer’s garage has gone viral and received widespread acclaim for the bravery of the unarmed farmer to overcome odds of three-to-one against.
One local resident, who withheld their name, said: “So many of our brave farmers are being killed and attacked that it is great when a farmer actually manages to fight back and beat them”.
The brave Boer, once he has a weapon in his hands, makes the three attackers who just moments earlier held all the aces look like terrified little boys as they run away for their very lives.
The incident happened at 9.30pm on Sunday, August 21, just as the farmer was retiring for bed, but after the all-action response he meted out it is unlikely he will have “visitors” anytime soon.
Farmers have been vulnerable to attacks in South Africa. Last year there were 59 farm murders and 395 farm attacks but the hallmark of most of them is the horrific brutality.
Last December farmer Neil Bierman, 47, was attacked along with his wife and three children at their rural farm of 15 years at Ogies in Mpumulanga Province and they were all tied up.
To get the terrified family to open the safe the gang put their six-year-old son Gideon in the oven and threatened to turn it on and roast him alive giving them no choice but to cooperate.
It was just one string of inhumane attacks on farmers which included just weeks before an old lady being tortured when tied up with a blow torch being used to horrifically scorch both her feet.
In another shocking incident, a gang broke into another farm and shot a husband dead and when his wife threw her body over him to protect them they callously broke both of her arms.
They then shot the couple’s son and left him for dead, leaving with items of little value as few farmers are wealthy, but instilling fear and terror hoping to drive the rural farmers off their land.
AfriForum is a pressure group representing the under-attack farmers. Their Head of Policy Ernst Roets said: “Farm attacks continue to be a source of grave concern because of the excessive violence that is regularly used to carry out the crimes.
“In 22% of the attacks the farm victim were brutally tortured by burning with hot irons, the use of power tools, battered or kicked to death or repeatedly stabbed or being hung from a tree.
“These continuing attacks show the lip service the Minister of Police Bheki Cele and President Cyril Ramaphosa pay to the matter which yields no results and communities must protect themselves.”
Latest South African crime statistics showing 67 murders a day and 115 rapes a day although the true figures are believed to be higher.
