THE INCIDENT ALLEGEDLY HAPPENED ON WEDNESDAY
In the CCTV video footage, you can see the gate open, and a car drives in. As the gate closes, another car is seen approaching. The car bumps into the closing gate, and an armed man quickly runs to the parked car inside the yard.
But then instant karma happens as the quick-thinking driver can be seen reversing at high speed, crashing through the gate and into the getaway vehicle.

HERE ARE SEVEN WAYS TO KEEP YOURSELF SAFE:
- Check that you are not being followed: Always be extra vigilant when leaving malls, your work, or when heading home late at night. That is when most follow-homes take place. Make sure you keep emergency numbers on hand, such as your security provider, SAPS, and your neighbours, in case you suspect you’re being followed.
- Be vigilant in your driveway: Outside your home, there may be less opportunity for you to escape in a hijacking situation, which could make you a hijacking victim. Stay out of your driveway, wait in the street, and only drive in once your gate has opened. Also, ensure your driveway is well-lit, especially when returning home at night.
- Check the street when approaching your home: When you approach your house, be extra alert by switching off the radio so you can be aware of your surroundings. Check your street for perpetrators before you leave or enter your home. Rather drive around the block if you have an unsafe feeling and see unfamiliar pedestrians around.
- Be aware of vehicles parked close to your address, especially with 3 or 4 people inside, as there could be hijackers observing the area.
- Be aware when parking your vehicle: You could be in a rush, but take one look around before exiting your car, and see if anyone suspicious could be around. When it comes to sitting in a vehicle, never sit in your parked vehicle without being conscious of your surroundings. Sleeping in your vehicle can also be particularly dangerous as you can be caught completely off guard, so try to avoid doing this.
- Keep alert when entering your vehicle: Have your keys ready, lock the door immediately after entering and close your windows. Make sure you do not leave bags, briefcases or any valuables inside the car. Rather place these items in the boot. Out of sight, out of mind.
- Be cautious while on the road: Know where you are going beforehand, to avoid getting lost in unknown areas. Be mindful of areas where there are high crime volumes.
