VIDEO – Heavy rain causes flooding and mudslide in Cape Town

After heavy rain overnight and on Wednesday morning, 14 June, many roads in Cape Town were flooded, the City’s Disaster Management confirmed. There are also reports of a mudslide.

CAPE TOWN AUTHORITIES ASSESSING DAMAGE AND EXTENT OF WEATHER IMPACT

City Departments are assessing the extent of weather-related impacts overnight to determine where assistance is needed. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and NGO partners could be called in to provide soft relief.

“We can confirm that numerous roadways have been flooded. There is also a report of a mudslide along Philip Kgosana Drive,” said spokesperson Charlotte Powell.

 

As previously reported, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall in the City of Cape Town and most parts of the Cape Winelands.

The weather service said rainfall accumulations of 45 to 60 millimetres, reaching 80 to 100 millimetres over high-lying areas, are expected. The warning is valid until midnight on Thursday, 15 June.

Life-threatening emergencies can be reported to the Cape Town Public Emergency Communication Centre at 021-480-7700 via a cellphone or 107 from a landline.
