There was a lot to smile about in the June vehicle sales data as 46 810 units were sold, that translated into year-on-year growth of 14%, according to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa).

In the light-commercial vehicle (LCV) category, 13 945 units were sold in June, according to Car Magazine. That figure includes bakkies and mini-buses, and is a substantial increase of 5070 units, or a gain of 57,1% compared to the same period last year.

JUNE VEHICLE SALES PERFORMANCE WAS EXCELLENT

The June vehicle sales data for the new passenger car market saw 29 795 units registered. That translates to an increase of 251 cars, or a gain of 0.8%, compared to the 29 544 new cars sold in June 2022.

However, our focus is on the bakkie sales, and the perennial best-sellers, Toyota and Ford were at the summit again.

VEHICLE EXPORTS PERFORMED WEAKER COMPARED TO THE SAME PERIOD LAST YEAR

The June 2023 exports sales number at 27 296 units reflected a decline of 3920 vehicles, or 12,6%, compared to the 31 216 vehicles exported in June 2022.

Vehicle exports performed weaker in June 2023 compared to the corresponding month 2022 but the export momentum remains upward on the back of further new model introductions by major exporters in the domestic market.
