City of Tshwane MMC for Community Safety, Ald Grandi Theunissen says he is deeply concerned about indications that there is active resistance against measures being put in place to restore discipline and ethics within the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD).
The City of Tshwane recently gave the public a right to request an officer’s appointment certificate, take a photo of the officer, their vehicle and also film the interaction. This is in response to the high number of alleged extortion and harassment cases opened against TMPD officers
TMPD OFFICERS PUSH BACK AGAINST MEASURES TO CURB CORRUPTION
The MMC said various directives and other internal measures have been implemented by the Acting Chief of Police Basil Nkwashu as a result of numerous complaints by members of the public who have become victims of criminal elements within the TMPD.
Theussen said he is disappointed by manifestations of active and passive resistance against ongoing attempts by Nkwashu.
“I would have liked to see the whole senior management rally behind the Acting Chief of Police in his efforts to address misbehaviour and to restore the image of the TMPD and his members, which has been tarnished by the rogue crooks among them. Unfortunately this does not seem to be the case,” the MMC said.

SAMWU ACCUSED OF SMEAR CAMPAGIN
Furthermore, the MMC accused the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) of criminal activities and a smear campaign against Nkwashu.
Theussen said he would have expected the unions to welcome the interventions which are aimed at improving their members’ working conditions and reputation.
