Now that new AARTO violations are coming online after the controversial act was upheld in Constitutional Court last week (Wednesday 12 July), we scoured through the penalties to find strangest ones on the books.

None fit into a conventional AARTO violation category and, truthfully, we didn’t even know you could get fined for some of these. Likewise, we’d applaud an officer who even tried to enforce one of these, rather than give a warning. But they are the law and it’s best you know about them before you try argue your case.

STRANGEST AARTO VIOLATIONS ON THE BOOKS

There are currently 2 659 offences listed on the AARTO website, but the following don’t fall under the six major categories, making them the strangest of the lot.

As a reminder, under the new AARTO penalties, motorists may only receive 15 demerit points on their license before suspension. You can be suspended twice before your driving license is taken away permanently. Each suspension means having to retake a driver’s/learner’s qualification test.
