QUICK-THINKING TAXI DRIVER APPREHENDS TWO OF THREE SUSPECTS
According to the preliminary investigation, the victims were homebound off-duty security guards. When the transport driver stopped at the corner of Hlathi Drive and Solomon Street in Asanda Village, he was robbed at gunpoint at approximately 20:00 on Wednesday, 19 April.
Two of the suspects then allegedly robbed the vehicle’s passengers before the three suspects fled the scene on foot. Meanwhile, some passengers managed to get away and sought help from an approaching taxi driver.
The taxi driver managed to chase down two suspects and apprehend them before handing them over to police, said Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie.

“Whilst police were processing the two, the third accomplice, coincidently or not, a colleague of those who were robbed, surrendered to police in acknowledgement of his involvement in the commission of the crime,” said Pojie.
The three suspects – aged between 26 and 33 – appeared before the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Friday and faced a string of charges related to the robbery. The trio was remanded in custody until Friday, 28 April.
