Suspect in Undertaker’s Car Arrested Smuggling Explosives into South Africa

LIMPOPO – The South African Police Service (SAPS) has arrested a suspect at Beitbridge Border Post, between South Africa and Zimbabwe, for smuggling explosives into SA. The 30-year-old man, who was driving a Funeral Undertaker’s vehicle, was apprehended yesterday (Sunday 27 July).

The SAPS members who performed the arrest had been busy with their routine duties at the border post when a vehicle, branded with the name of a funeral pallor from Johannesburg, approached towing a trailer.

SAPS said in a statement that the vehicle was searched, together with its trailer, and the police found 306 units of blasting cartridges and four (04) rims of detonating cord estimated at R700,800.00. The explosives were hidden in the trailer.

The lone driver was immediately arrested, and will soon appear in Musina Magistrate’s court, said SAPS, on a charge of smuggling and possession of explosives.

It’s believed that the explosives may have been intended for Cash-in-Transit heists, although this was not confirmed by SAPS.

Suspects arrested with cigarettes

The arrest was performed by the same SAPS members who last week arrested two suspects at the border post for smuggling illicit cigarettes – hidden in a petrol tanker – into South Africa. Today police arrested another two men for the sale of cigarettes in the Northern Cape, which were smuggled in from Namibia.
