By-elections will be held in 95 wards across 55 municipalities throughout South Africa tomorrow, 11 November, 7am-9pm. Some 600,000 registered voters can vote, and 20 of the municipalities are in the Northern Cape.
A total of 444 candidates from 40 parties will contest the by-elections, 305 (69 percent) male and 139 female. (See here for a list of candidates.)
The Independent Electoral Commission said that COVID protocols would be in place at the polling stations, and that voters should bring ID, pen and mask.
“This will also be the first time South Africans will cast their ballots during a global pandemic and will be a litmus test for the IEC, ahead of next year’s municipal elections,” the IEC said.
