Simon’s Town gets a newly painted penguin pedestrian crossing
This pedestrian crossing was recently painted by the artist Jacques Coetzer and can be found close to Boulders Beach in Simonstown.
Boulders Beach is famous worldwide for its colony of African Penguins. It remains the only place in the world where tourists and locals can get up close to the penguins.
The City collaborated with artist Jacques Coetzer to create a newly painted pedestrian crossing close to Boulders Beach.
According to the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas, ‘the Simon’s Town, Boulders Beach area is globally famous for the colony of African Penguins, a much-loved feature of the south peninsula, loved by locals and visitors alike. This new partnered art pedestrian crossing depicting adorable penguins in standing, diving and swimming positions is thanks to the local ratepayers’ associations, penguin friends and the City’s Urban Mobility Directorate in advising, consulting and approving the installation. We have over the past two years invested in or approved a partner-installed place making pedestrian crossings and other ‘pavement’ public art in order to create an urban streetscape energy or indicate heritage, tourism and cultural precincts”.
