Rachel Kolisi, wife of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi, says Covid is not like flu… it’s far worse.
Sharing her experience of testing positive for Covid-19, Rachel says that at first she thought she just had a sinus infection. She had no fever, sore throat or coughing; and actually spent the day in the swimming pool.
But when she realised that she couldn’t smell anything, she went straight into isolation and had herself tested. Sure enough, she was positive. South Africa is currently experiencing a high rate of positive coronavirus cases, with a new mutated strain (known as the 501.V2 variant) being blamed as it appears to spread faster.
On Sunday 27 December, Rachel – who most South Africans know as being super fit -revealed how tough having Covid-19 has been. “It’s been so rough and scary at times specially when you have small kids who don’t understand why they can’t touch you. My heart breaks for those in hospital having to fight this alone, not knowing if they’ll see their loved ones again. Equally my heart breaks for the healthcare workers working tirelessly and understaffed while others are not taking the safety precautions seriously at all.”
Rachel went on to say: “COVID is not like flu. It’s so much worse and if my posting can encourage someone to take one extra step of precaution that will be great, also if you know of people not taking Covid seriously please have a conversation with them about it. People are dying.
“It’s clear our numbers in SA are out of control – we’re just short of 1 million cases. Yet some people are more relaxed about it then ever? ??♀️”
The day after Rachel’s post, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a move from Level 1 to an adjusted Lockdown Alert Level 3 in South Africa.
On Sunday evening, Prof Salim Abdool Kalim, from SA’s Covid Ministerial Advisory Committee, appeared on Carte Blanche to discuss Covid-19, the symptoms, the vaccine and the fact that about one in 10 survivors may be in for the long haul where their coronavirus symptoms – including breathing difficulty, double-vision and crippling fatigue amongst others – can last for weeks and months, even when test results no longer show any sign of COVID-19 infection in the body.
