1969 | Thembekile “Thembi” Mandela, the oldest child of Nelson Mandela and Evelyn Mase, died in a car accident in 1969, while his father was serving a life sentence on Robben Island.
1985 | A number of cities, including Moscow and Sydney, hosted the Live Aid charity event, in addition to London and Philadelphia.
1990 | Lenin Peak disaster: The greatest climbing disaster in history claimed the lives of 43 climbers when a 6.4-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan caused an avalanche on Lenin Peak.
2008 | Guerrilla attacks by the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan lead to the start of the Battle of Wanat. The number of American fatalities in a single battle since operations began in 2001 was at that time the highest.
