The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has announced Dr Mpho Phalatse as the party’s mayoral candidate in the City of Johannesburg following the resignation of Thapelo Amad.
Amad resigned just hours before a motion of no confidence was tabled against him.
DA NOMINATES MPHO PHALATSE AS THE CITY OF JOHANNESBURG MAYORAL CANDIDATE
A special sitting will be held in the Johannesburg council on 2 May in order to elect a new mayor.
The DA said Phalatse has a proven track record and an understanding of the needs of the people of Johannesburg.
Amad replaced Phalatse after she was ousted in a no-confidence motion in January 2023.

The party said it is disappointing that Amad, another puppet mayor, was manipulated by the ANC/EFF/PA coalition of corruption for their personal gain. By supporting Amad as mayor the ANC/EFF/PA sabotaged service delivery and placed their personal interests above the interest of Johannesburg residents.
“They suspended investigations into corruption, that had been initiated under the DA multiparty coalition, and re-instated officials accused of corruption. Amad was forced to resign before a motion of no confidence to remove him would almost certainly have passed,” the party said.
ACTION SA WEIGHS IN ON THAPELO AMAD
As previously reported by The South African, ActionSA had announced that it will submit motions of no confidence against Amad and Council Speaker Colleen Makhubele.

ActionSA Caucus spokesperson in the City of Johannesburg, Sthembelo Majola previously said Mayor Amad, which he labeled as an expedient candidate between the ANC and EFF’s coalition of doom, has time and time again proven to be woefully ill-equipped and unable to articulate a coherent plan of action and vision for the City.
He said since Amad’s election, service delivery in Johannesburg has rapidly deteriorated, with heaps of rubbish piling on the City’s streets.
