Level 5 weather warning: Strong winds to damage settlements

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS:

A. A Yellow Level 2 Warning: Waves resulting in difficulty in navigation at sea are expected between Alexander Bay and Port Alfred, spreading to Coffee Bay by the evening.

B. A Yellow Level 2 Warning: Winds resulting in localized damage to formal or informal settlements, and difficult driving conditions on major highways are expected over the Cape Winelands and Central Karoo District of the Western Cape, the interior of the Eastern Cape, central and southern parts of the Northern Cape as well as the southern parts of the Free State.

C. An Orange Level 5 Warning: Winds resulting in damage to settlements and properties is expected over Sarah Baartman and western part of the Chris Hani Districts of the Eastern Cape.

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS:

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Northern Cape and Mohokare Local Municipality in the Free State.

ADVISORIES:

Very cold, wet and windy conditions are expected with the passage of the cold front in places over the interior of the Western Cape and southern parts of the Northern Cape from Friday evening. These conditions are expected to spread to the Eastern Cape by the Saturday evening and southern Free State on Sunday and reaching Gauteng and Mpumalanga from early on Monday. Such conditions may have adverse effect on small stock farming.

GAUTENG

Temperature: Fine and cool

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: High.

MPUMALANGA

Temperature: Fine and cool but warm in the Lowveld

LIMPOPO

Temperature: Fine and cool to warm.

NORTH WEST

Temperature: Fine and cool.

FREE STATE

Temperature: Fine, windy and cool.

NORTHERN CAPE

Temperature: Partly cloudy and cold to very cold with light rain in the south and west where it will be cloudy, but fine and cool in the north-east. Light snowfalls are expected over the southern high ground by evening.

Wind: – The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh west to southwesterly.

WESTERN CAPE

Temperature: Cloudy and cold but very cold over the high lying areas. Widespread showers are expected in the south-west with scattered to isolated rain showers over the interior and south-coast. Light snowfalls can be expected over the mountainous areas from the evening.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong west to south-westerly.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index: Low.

EASTERN CAPE

The Western half: Partly cloudy and cool, but cold in the extreme south-west. Isolated showers are expected from the afternoon, with evening snow likely over the high peaks of the coastal mountains as well as the Sneeuberg.

The Western half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong westerly to southwesterly.

The Eastern half: Fine and cool, becoming partly cloudy. Overnight showers are expected in the extreme west.

The Eastern half – Wind: The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south-westerly.

KWAZULU-NATAL

Temperature: Fine and cool but warm in the east. It will become partly in the southeast towards evening with isolated showers and rain.

Wind: The wind along the coast will be moderate northerly to north-westerly, but fresh in the north becoming moderate to fresh south-westerly from the south towards afternoon, spreading northwards.
