These were words on Twitter about #Zwe, who was, according to the Democratic Alliance’s Sakhile Mngadi, “allegedly hacked in his own house, left unconscious and the house was then set alight with him still inside in Eshowe, Northern KwaZulu-Natal. It is suspected that this was a hate crime because Zwe was openly gay. Queer lives matter. Zwe mattered.”

The 28-year-old was apparently an active member of the LGBTQ community in Eshowe.
“We condemn this loss of life, and the continued killing of gay and lesbian persons in our communities,” the DA said in a statement. “We call on the police to prioritise homophobic attacks against our community and continue the call for the enforcement of laws that already exist, and are there to protect the most vulnerable in our society.”
