Do you live in the City of Johannesburg? You might have to dig a bit deeper into your pocket when you pay for water and electricity as tariff hikes kick in in July.

City of Johannesburg Finance MMC Dada Morero announced the hikes when he delivered his R80 billion budget for the 2023/24 financial year recently in June.

WATER AND ELECTRICITY HIKES IN JOHANNESBURG

These are the increases effective from 1 July 2023:

Water – 9.3%

Electricity – 14.97%

Property rates – 2%

Refuse collection – 7%

Sanitation – 9.3%

Morero also revealed that the metro will be allocating R3.1 billion to Joburg Water in a bid to replace water and sewage infrastructure.

Sewer upgrades will be made in many areas, including Orange Farm, Lanseria, Soweto, Diepsloot, Ennerdale and Cosmo City.

The MMC also reiterated that they are committed to reducing the impact of load shedding through roof-top solar and battery storage programmes, with the help of the national government.
