The Joburg CBD explosion precinct is in the process of being reconnected with services after it was declared safe by the City Manager Floyd Brink.

GREEN LIGHT GIVEN TO RECONNECT SERVICES BY JRA

Brink provided another status update earlier today indicating that he got clearance from the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to undertake the reconnection of services, including water and electricity.

“Definitely today there will be some form of electricity in the area. Joburg Water will also be restoring as well, including the sewer system.” – Brink

CITY POWER SWITCHES POWER BACK

City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena also confirmed that they have switched on the power to some residents within the Joburg CBD who were affected by the explosion.

“At least 50% of the resident load feeding from Bree substation were energized today at 11h40. These include Bank City, Pritchard, west of Loveday, Jeppe, West Street, Diagonal, Sauer, Harrison, President, Simmons, JRA, and the surrounding area west of Bree streets,” he said.

“Those still off include streets east and north of Bree street, part of President, Jeppe, Kerk, Plein, Loveday, Rissik, Harrison, Von Brandis streets. More tests are currently being done on other feeders, and cables are pressure tested before restoration happens. We expect every customer to be restored by this afternoon,” Mangena explained.

JOBURG CBD EXPLOSION RISK LEVELS

He added that the team worked hard overnight after the clearance was given by the Emergency Services, Disaster Management, and Labour. The gas levels were also cleared at 1% on the risk matrix.

“We also expect to restore the feeder cables under the collapsed road structure along Bree Street after they tested clear during the initial testing this morning. Customers who are still off by this evening should please log a call so that our technicians can attend to it,” Mangena advised.

Lillian Ngoyi formerly known as Bree Street in the Joburg CBD collapsed last week following an underground explosion which left one person killed and multiple injured.
